I'm freaked out, but I'm more excited. Here's how the first week went.

Sunday, 11/05: Full-blown studio action. The Zygote sessions we're in full-swing at Pleasantry Lane, and we managed to get the begining of a great track togther (tenative title, "Magicial Dracula Powers"). Seriously. I got so hyped about the work that Aaron and I did, that I posted it on our Myspace music page. Fucking weird.

Monday, 11/06: I got Kevin some mix CD's to give away at Good Records, then met up with a friend, and proceeded to go to WAY to many bars.....

Tuesday, 11/07: It was a lounge around recovering from Monday day (and I went to Mia's for the first time since coming back to Dallas. Their Brisket tacos OWN!!!), until the evening. Then it was out with friends to the movies and a night cap.

Wednesday, 11/08: I began to preping everything for my upcoming tour in January. Met up with Mwanza, Gerard (aka Convextion) and Charlie P. from the Tah-Dahs at the Libertine for drinks the over to Bishop Manor studios for some late night chaos. I've known Charlie for 10 years now, and it's great to see him doing well....but I digress.

Thursday, 11/09: Aaron and I went to Meridian Room and ran into Chris McCall and Suitcase. Saw DJ Mr. Rid do his thing and closed the night at Lee Harveys, where I met another new friend, who I believe I was buying drinks for and everyone called "Texas Red." Good times.

Friday, 11/10: The Central booking crew was on full-blast with "The Party at Zubar. Our camp at the Bell House decided to have a pre-party . Lori, Chris, Mary, Prince William and a group of fam showed up and we posseed up and went to Zu. The guys were stellar as usual, and Kevin even brought fuckin' airhorns. True story.

Saturday, 11/11: Unit One blew up Wax with Dub Assembly 4. Serious business. The kids were on point, Mundo, Lifted, Keith P, Tiny and the whole crew just locked it down tight. After getting home at around 1:44am, there was a knock on the door, and a birthday party irrupted in my house until around 5. Don't ask, just wait for the pictures....

Sunday, 11/12: A day of reflection. The momentium I have right now is crazy. I'm opening for Flock of Seagulls next Friday, I have the DAT Politics/Kevin Blechdom show on December 9th and I'm on tour for January/Feburary. I'm also about to put-out a picture disc with Scream Club and some other NW bands (came out of the blue, but sounded like fun), I'm going to do a remix for Smile, Smile, Pikahsso and still find time to freelance. It's fucking great!!!

By the way, The Fineline is all jacked-up right now, so stay tuned for another installment of The Chronicles of Low Frequency just as soon as the internet gremlins have gotten exterminated!!

08.17.06>The Texas Asphalt Society

We're in the triple digit nasty weather here in the lone star state, and the sweatbox asethtic is fully-tilted. On the DJ front, Panoptikon is on hiatus until Saturday September 23rd, at which point I'll resume my residency and will be back in the V.I.P. dropping more freakbeat electo and dark wave booty jams. And look out for the Hospital Fetish Party, that's going to be a whole new level of nuts!

On the production front, Zygote (Aaron Mobley & yours truly, Stephen Ruiz) have been slaving away at Salim Nourallah's Pleasantry Lane Studio working on the new full-length record, "Radio Anthems for the Newly Disenfrnchized" which is slated for late fall, early winter release 2006.

On the DJ/Remix/Production front, I have been bearing the fruits of insomnia, jamming the remix competition circuit dropping remixes for the Mochipet and Spank Rock battles, the later of which was given a nice boost by local taste maker, Gorilla Vs. Bear. To quote, "...when a local DJ makes a remix as ill as this one, I'm all ears." Hot damn. I caught Echo and the Bunneyman, at least a few songs in their set, at the Gypsy on Friday. They were in great form. It was amazing to see how well they've held up over time. After the show, I headed out to DJ a set at the Melissa's Deluxe after-party cum Birthday Party for McQueen. Rad times were had by all.....

Saturday night was CRAZY! The Lollipop Shoppe kids threw one hell of a party at the Doublewide in Dallas. As part of the "Mod and Soul Weekender" German DJ Frank Papp threw down some amazing rare soul and go-go, and The Dirty Novels threw down just an amazing set of Garage rock that sounded like it could have come straight out of Detroit. A wonderful party by a wonderful group of people. Mad props to Patricia and Gabe. You guys know how to make the kids shake their asses!

Speaking of ass-shaking, I just got a line on the new (debut?) mix CD from the Flashlight Party boys called "Oh Shit it's The Flashlight Party" volume 1. Serious a funky and eclectic mix of amazing stuff. Be sure and show them some love on Weds. night at Elm Street Bar, because these kids know their shit. For all you Trainspotters out there, peep out the track listing:

1. Intro to Bloc Party- Helicopters (diplo remix)
2. The Faint- Dust
3. The Audio-Logic Blog is being wrapped into http://www.finelinelive.com blog. Now, for those of you who do not know, Fine Line was started by on Ms. Cindy who founded the award-winning TexasGigs.com. I've been looking for a new and "offical" home for Audio-Logic, and it looks like we've found it. I'm REALLY excited about the direction of A.L. under the Fine Line umbrella. Now, if your not familiar with the rivalry in these 2 camps, Death From Above 1979 had some choice words for DFA records when they asked them to change their name. They added 4 numbers to their name (the minimum legally) and posted this on their web site:

"FUCK DFA RECORDS FUCK JAMES MURPHY WE DECLARE JIHAD ON THEM HOLY WAR ENDING IN THIER DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT... james murphy is a selfish piece of fuck that will burn in the flames of a specially dedicated rock and roll jihad. if i had the resources i would fly a plane into his skull."

We can only hope that these two brilliant camps have sorted out their differences and can go and rock together.

http://www.myspace.com/shitrobot
http://www.deathfromabove1979.com/
http://www.mstrkrft.com/
http://www.dfarecords.com/
+++++

Jeff Parker Interview

I've got an upcoming interview with the wonderfully talented Jeff Parker of Tortoise, Isotope 217, Chicago Underground, New Horizons Ensemble and WAY too many to list here. I caught up with Liz the Indie Kitten (who owns and opperates Halo Artist Development) on Friday, after our chance meeting at Meat Radio HQ last Friday. As a new local band manager and "girl on the scene," she's already helped 'Fishing for Comets' become a more visable local act and win the Best Folk/Accustic award at the DOMA's this year. Keep an eye on her (I know I will...) she's a girl on the move. And speaking of people in motion, the hardest working man in the Dallas underground and I made the rounds late Friday evening (ealry Saturday morning?) and boy did I get an ear full.

Wanza Dover got in on Friday night from Lawrence, Kansas after his first session recording the new Mazinga Phazer II record. He called me and suggested we meet up for drinks, so we were off to the races. After a few beers and much convincing, I was able to take a sneak listen of one of the new tracks, and all I can say is that you will not be dissapointed! It's incredible and I can't wait to hear what the full record sounds like.

Saturday night was the latest installment of the High Society Party at the Avenue Arts Center which brought out the more prolific DJ of North Texas, DJ Nature. This afterhours affair was a blast! As usual, Nature dropped a mind-blowing set of Grime, Baltimore Club, Hip-Hop and Dance Hall, while the people-watching was almost as much fun. Seeing an Eddy Ruiz, loaded, wearing a 1980's meets Riverdance outfit with cans tapped to his shoes for that "extra lift," was hands-down the most interesting specticle of the evening. Props to High Society, their parties are getting better every event.

05.16.06>pirate radios, solo acts, foxes, epic metal and more!!!

1. The Detroit Electronic Music Festival. - www.demf.com
I may be traveling to Detroit to work for "The Man," but as part of my jaunt into Corporate America, I get to go to one of the world's most preiminent electronic music festivals. The driving force of making Radiohead the weirdest band in stadium rock is making a solo record? Mr. Yorke has won the confidence of even the coolest of indie kids by refusing to pick the batton passed on by U2 to ascend into the Pantheon of rock and roll, which inevitabily strips away all orginality and crative conviction. With a sonic template as diverse as anyone laptop meister, I suspect that Mr. Yorke's effort with be one of the most widely anticipated solo rleases this year.

5. Faux Fox - www.fauxfox.com
One of the most orginal bands in the D/D/FW area right now. From "Grits and Gravy" with Gabriel from Lollipop Shoppe to "Jet Set Radio" with Happy Bullets drummer Rhett to other stuff I'm not sure about (just check out the linke above, okay?), Meat Radio takes on the philosophy of "less talk and more action." With steallar taste firmly i tact, Grooves has taken the music they review to the people sho want to hear it most. At least they have been until now. Metrognome is dedicated to independent cinema in all its forms, and to further public awareness and create an independent-filmmakers support group, we are trying to put together a local, not-for-profit film center in the Untitled #1518 building. Equipped for screenings, meetings, lectures, production and post-production work, the 1000 square foot space will be a home for local filmmakers to collaborate, promote their works, arrange screenings, client meetings, and more. Filmmakers, production companies, or businesses interested in participating-in, volunteering for, or sponsoring this venture should come out for an introductory meeting at 7:30pm on Sunday May 14th at the Spiral Diner at 1314 W.Magnolia, Fort Worth TX 76104. After a meet-and-greet at the Spiral, we will be heading over to the Metrognome to look at the space and discuss the possibilities it holds.

http://upcoming.org/event/75840/ | http://www.metrognomecollective.org/

--------------------------------

Do you know about MORE good stuff going on this weekend? Holla acha Boy!!!

05/10/06>Sprung in Assasination City

Sprung in Assasination City

Dallas has officially moved into Sping, and while the demise of the local music scene is being annoucned by local journalists, strange and interstesting things are boiling just underneath the surface of the metroplex area. If you've noticed the lack of posting on this blog, you maybe be wondering where my once feverish enthusiasm for my adopted home scene has gone. Well, fear not dear reader, for although my archive of experiences has dwindled, my activity in all things music in the area has jumped to an all-time high. Here are some of the highlights of the past month...

------------------------------------------

First off, the Wall of Sound Festival happened in Ft. Worth. It was 2 days of music, with some well-known names filling out quite a bill of national (Low, The New & David B. of Pedro the Lion) and local talent. Now, I was only able to catch the first day, (I was working with Kate Mackley of Texasgigs.com) but my personal favorites of day 1 of the show (and there was NO way for me to see all of the acts that performed that day), in no particular order were:

Mazinga Phaser II
experimental aircraft
Kissing Cousins
Loxsly
Pink Nasty
Red Monroe
Snowdonnas
The Angelus
The Black Angels
Tree Wave

It was a great event and I'm looking forward to next year.

------------------------------------------
TV on the Radio and Celebration

....played at the Gypsy Tearoom.....it was rad!

------------------------------------------
Kid606 at the Red Blood Club, Dallas

Now, as the promoter and DJ at the event, it's VERY difficult for me to be objective about the event, but I'll try. With live performances by Bexarametric, Tree Wave and a mind-blistering set from DJ Nature, I was already floored by goodness by the time Kid606 hit the stage....the show, simply, jumped off!!! And the afterparty??? Damn, where to start! ;)

------------------------------------------
Meat Radio

If you're in the East Dallas/Lakewood/Lower Greenville...Meat Radio 102.5 FM Friday 9pm Rhett from Happy Bullets is hosting a radio show....
Jet Set Ret

------------------------------------------

05.10.06>Top 10 Cool shit in my orbit

1) Tracks (and a live show??) from CRUNC TESLA

http://www.myspace.com/crunctesla

2) Mix Tapes and Live Sets from DJ NATURE Did I mentioned The Party (Every Weds. Metric brought their brand of ass shaking, post-punk goodness to the Gypsy Ballroom and brought Islands (featuring members from the defunt indie wonderkind band the Unicorns) in tow.

Island was a great surprise. From the ashes of the band Unicorns has arisen a band of depth and amaging musical skill. Their set including a rage of styles, from Bluegrass to epic indie rock goodness (think a VW commerical), without sounding derivitive. With more than 4 multi-insturmentalists in the band, there were violins and wind intruments thrown for a mix, making for a beautiful range of sound.

When Metric hit the stage, lead singer Emily Haines' was every bit the ingenue, holding the crowd with her mix of 'runway model meets twitchy club kid'. The wall of lighting behind the band added to the band's stage pressence, but made for an experience that at times overwhelmed the music. The band's perfromance was great overall, all of the songs flowed well and stage show was that of a band who's on the cusp of really moving into a new stratosphere.

01.19.06>Podcast

Our latest installment of "Audio Logic" is here.....we were feeling a bit groovy this time around and have some fun tracks in the northern soul vein, alnog with some lounge, some plunderphonics and 60's gems....along with some of our favorite artists. Nevertheless, The Juan Maclean and LCD Soundsystem threw down their analog soaked rock and roll with much enthsiasm and "much patience". I've been a fan of the label since first getting turned-on to Black Dice a few years ago and had no idea that through BD's abstract wall of noise asthetic that I would be lured into the world of brash dance music. I'm not all togther sure that Dallas is ready for this, but the people in the audience were.

The show opened with The Juan Maclean's twitchy, paranoid disco performed in a rigid, but highly energetic setting. His drummer kept time with Juan's 4/4 analog and vocoder spice. His set-up included not just said drummer, but another band member (who looked suspiously like one of the members of Blak Dice) who played keys and theremin and generally kept the live show interesting. Juan kept the crowd intrigued with his cowbell skills, his vocoded vocals and his ability to rock the analog units like a pro. It was a very stong live performance from a producer who has put out one of the strongest record of the year. Kudos to Juan.

When James Murphy and company hit the stage, the crowd was ready to hear the live version of what has admittedly been the most hyped bands of the past few years. The Soundsystem did not disappoint. As they plowed through their set list, the crowd did everything from dance to sing-along. Songs such as "Beat Connection", "Yeah" and "Losing My Edge" kept the indie kids in a kinetic frenzy.

Overall, the performances were amazing. Seeing the bands play live made me have a whole new level of respect for their work. It's one thing to have stellar production in in the studio. Most bands would kill to achieve the quality of the recordings that Juan and the LCD Soundsystem have. Translating this into a good live performance can sometimes be a difficult proposition, and this is something they've both accomplished.

08.07.05 > One Umbrella

One Umbrella, Solve (Tell All Records)

Solve, the latest effort of Austin's experimental music dynamic duo One Umbrella, is a complex mix of noise, improvisation and beautiful melodic nuance. The collection of songs on this record feel like a soundtrack to a Man Ray film. There is a sense of unease mixed with bliss, a kind of catharsis from the tension that lies just beneath the surface of the music.

The track titles themselves are as complex as the music. The track itxitxx sounds like a wooden gong harp being panned through a massive sound system. The trick here is that listening through headphones is the best way to fully appreciate the song. OIOI starts off like the buzzing of bees from far away, with a sound swell, then release. Xestyl sounds like a beautiful love song comprised of organized static.

Starting with 8trs, the songs start to take on some similarities, almost as if O.U. were wanting to play of similar ideas. 8trs is a piano piece. It's sounds as if the piano is being played from a distance, with distorted vocals hanging in the air behind it. Uhm is almost a variation on a theme from 8trs, however feels more parinoid, more panicked, like a distorted mantra. Mhu starts with the sounds from uhm, reversed and skipping. Srt8 starts with the vocal phrase "after of thousands of years of cultural and technological evolution, shouldn't we be spending our time reading poetry, contemplating the cosmos" and then the vocal distorts under the weight of a reversed soundtrack that, again, plays on a variation of the last 2 songs. The last song on the record, eintrocinc start off with a slight metallic sound, then fades into a trance inducing guitar melody that trails off into a trance inducing crescendo, then ends in an atmospheric hum.

This, simply, is a beautiful record.

This review originally submitted to the Oklahoma Gazette, all content rights pending publication.

More information:
http://www.oneumbrella.net/
http://www.tellallrecords.com/

08.31.05 > the kid and the guilloteens

KID606, Resilience (Tigerbeat6 Records):
The king of crunchy, abrasive laptop beats switches gears here and has put togther a collection of tracks that find the kid in a more emotive and introspective mood. The tracks "Done with the Scene","Short Road Down" and "Cascadia" pay homage to some of the early Warp Records output, complete with melodic analog synth washes and midtempo break beaks. "Phoenix Riddim" and "Banana Peel" continues to explore Mr.606's obsession with digital dub and dancehall. The two stand-out tracks on the record are "Sugarcoated" and "Audition". "Sugarcoated" Starts off electro, moves into analog synthland, a la daft punk the builds into an overload of sythisizer maddness, with the filters gurgling out lazer noises that don't sound at all like a laptop. "Audition" Starts with Guitar, and builds like a Mogwai song without the cliche crashendo, adding in barely audible ambient elements. Overall, the record is a nice change of pace from his usual frenetic output.
This review originally submitted to the Oklahoma Gazette, all content rights pending publication.

The Fatal Flying Guilloteens hit the road

The Houston based, GSL records post-punk, garage, no-wave freak-out band unleashes their live fury on the road in September.
